If you need to replace your existing DVD cases or you're looking for cases for new DVDs, you should  weigh buying slim DVD  cases.  Even  though most consumers still get the regular DVD cases, slim ones are for  many reasons.

So what's so fantastic about slim DVD cases?  The  most important benefit about them is that because they're not very wide, they  need lots less storage space than common cases..  For example, slim DVD cases come in at around 7mm in width while  standard ones are around 2 times that wide..

They're  approximately one-half the width of a regular case so they just take up   about half the space. Because they are  common sized however, they continue to fit  in flawlessly into all regular size DVD holders or  shelves.  If own a big  DVD collection, or even a medium sized one, that might mean far  less space that you need for storage. The single serious problem around slim DVD  cases is that it may be difficult to place all the liner notes and  booklets from your DVDs into them, and also the title on the sides might be too  thin.  Still  you can get around this problem by just trimming the sides of the  cover notes a bit to make the paper side the same width as the case.   You can still clearly see what's on the  side of the cover so you can still store them comfortably on shelves.

Two additional choices to  regular DVD cases are to use CD jewel cases or to get DVD sleeves.  Jewel  covers are excellent because they're smaller than DVD cases, and so  need less space for storage,  however they are always fragile and will break  very easily if you mishandle them. If this occurs, you'll have to exchange the cover and maybe also the  complete disc if it gets broken.  Sleeves are quite small and so  require the least space, but they also allow the  lowest  amount of protection for your DVDs.  They are only good for DVDs that you want to  keep for  the long term but hardly ever actually take out or get  at.Irrespective what kind of  DVD cases you choose to buy, there are some basic storage hints that you   should be aware of.

First of all, you have to  store your DVDs out of sunlight. Sunlight is bad news for any kind of discs, as is heat – they will lead to  a decline in quality of your dsics very speedily, so make sure your DVDs are put in a reasonably dark  and cold site.

The  second rule is to not touch your discs as much as viable, and  especially on the underside.  Our hands have oils and some  more things which might be the cause of problems with discs, so  simply touch them when you really must, and then be sure to only touch the upper face and the sides, never the bottom.Being tidy wtih your discs is another way to really help them remain in good condition for a long time.  It's  all too simple to not think about this or leave discs sitting  not in their covers, but dust and other contaminants will begin to cause  damage to them very quickly if you do. Your DVDs  must not ever be lying anywhere other than in the DVD player or  in their covers.

Finally, if you have children, and  especially small ones, ensure that your discs are  put away from  their curious little arms.  Irrespective of  whether they're in cases or not, children can  do lots of damage if they can reach your discs. Putting DVDs around  youngsters is  guaranteed to lead to damaged and  broken covers, destroyed discs, and many fingermarks and  signs  on the discs themselves.  The one means around this is  simply to make sure children cannot reach your DVDs until they're  at least 9 or 10 and able to take care of them.

Although you  could follow all these easy ideas, most consumers don't  and then they land up needing to replace their full  DVD collections. Get  high quality DVD cases, be sensible with how you look after your  DVDs, and  you'll no doubt keep them for a long time.
